Description
Pre-Columbian, South America, Colombia, Narino or Quimbaya, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. This is a trio of finely formed pottery spindle whorls meticulously decorated with elaborate geometric motifs in white slip on black ground, the patterns enhancing the contours of each form. Some scholars have proposed that these striated patterns were intended to mimic those observed upon the surfaces various fruits and flowers. Nicely mounted upon a wooden base. Size: Each spindle whorl measures approximately 1-3/4" in diameter x 1-1/4"H (4.4 x 3.2 cm); with stand 7-1/2" x 2-3/4" (19.1 x 7 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private Houston, TX collection acquired at auction or local gallery between 1982 and 1994.
