Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a brownware sculpture with realistic form. The male effigy is seated with his hands folded across his lap. He has interesting facial features, distinctive hair, a nose ring, and large earrings. A figure like this would have been placed inside of a shaft tomb; they were placed facing outwards, towards the remains of the deceased, as if in conversation or mediation between them and the world of the living.
