Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a Nayarit painted red and cream slip pottery warrior, seated on a two-legged stool and wearing barrel armor, a helmet, and necklaces. He holds a club and paint details on his face suggest that he may have facial tattoos or scarification. Stylized warriors like these were placed inside of tombs in the West Mexican shaft tomb tradition; some archaeologists have interpreted them as guardians of the grave, while others have seen them more as intermediaries between the living and the dead. This is a classic example of the Nayarit style, which was probably produced as a general figure rather than representing an individual. Size: 13-1/2" H x 6" W (34.3 cm x 15.2 cm).

Condition
The head has been repaired, but the repair is well done and the piece appears intact. There are extensive manganese blooms. The lower back has a mark as if there was once a sticker there that someone peeled off, but it is very difficult to see.
