Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fun example of a seated warrior handmade pottery figure with exciting pigment details all the way around the body of the sculpture. Its wide, staring eyes and open mouth, combined with what it holds in its hand - a shell? An instrument? A weapon? - give this figure a dynamic pose. It wears armlets, earrings, a nose ring, and a headband, as well as a belt. Bright red paint starts below its knee and covers its feet; its back has a stippled white dot design. Figures like this one would have been placed into the tombs dug in shafts beneath Jalisco households where family members were periodically interred; archaeologists believe that they were placed around the edges of the tomb facing inward, as if in conversation with the dead.
