framed. Being Alive is from a vibrant and uplifting body of work entitled Feel Good Paintings for Feel Bad Times. Finding inspiration in pop culture, political realities, film, Yiddish, art historical styles, and prominent art world figures, Deborah Kass uses appropriation in her work to explore notions of identity, politics, and her own cultural interests. She received her BFA in painting at Carnegie Mellon University and studied at the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program and the Art Students League of New York.
In 2012, the Andy Warhol Museum presented a mid-career retrospective, which received much well-deserved attention. Kass's work has been shown at the Venice Biennale, Istanbul Biennale, Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Museum of Modern Art, NY; Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; National Portrait Gallery, Washington, DC; Jewish Museum, NY; Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
