Description
Deborah Lou Turbeville (1932-2013), untitled Versailles Portfolio (17), 1981, artist's proof, sight: 13 x 19.5", matte: 24 x 18"
Deborah Lou Turbeville was born in Stoneham, Massachusetts in 1932. She was known for fashion photography, and many of her works appeared in numerous notable magazines and newspapers both nationally and internationally, including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Mirabella, and Bruno Magli, Nike, Macy's and Bloomingdale's. Turbeville's work purposefully depicts that of sorrow, despair, distress, and a deep sense of longing. Turbeville's commentary on fashion's manipulation of women resulted in a manipulation of her negative images through scratching, tearing, scattering dust on and distressing her work. Her work was often deliberately overexposed and black-and-white with sepia tones. Her work became so well known that photography articles began to refer similar photography as having "the Deborah Turbeville look." Turbeville received the Fashion Group Lifetime Award for Fashion Photography in 1989 and the Alfred Eisenstadt Award for Magazine Photography for the Fashion Single Image and Photo Essay in 1998.
