Description
[Cleeve, Charles.] THE SONGS OF MOSES AND DEBORAH PARAPHRASD. WITH POEMS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS… TO WHICH IS ADDED, A PINDARICK ON MR. L'ESTRANGE. London: for Luke Meredith, 1685. 7.25" x 4.5". [16], 142, [2] pp., including ad leaf at rear. Bound in period sprinkled sheep. ********** FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR'S ONLY BOOK, published when he was twenty-four years old. The "Songs of Moses and Deborah" take up the first third of the book and are followed by many interesting poems such as "On two Lads unfortunately expell'd the University for Riot." Also contains some good lines on contemporary writers, such as Dryden. A very scarce book. RBH records only 2 appearances in the last 25 years. This copy with an early ownership signature of John Myddelton to upper title (probably the M.P. 1685-1747.)
Condition
Binding intact, with some rubbing along spine and other minor scuffs. Contents clean overall with occasional very minor stains and some early ink marks, upper corner-chip to leaf D3 removing page number but not affecting text otherwise, front endpaper not present. A nice copy overall.
