Biography: Omar Torres Perez. Outstanding Cuban landscape painter, self-taught, born in the second half of the 20th century. He has developed his most significant work in Perico. His works are part of private collections in several countries such as Nicaragua, the United States, Panama and Costa Rica. He was born on January 23, 1962 in Colón. He is the son of Marta Perez La Rosa and Leonardo Torres Morales (both deceased). His childhood and adolescence took place like that of any child of his time in Cuatro Esquinas, Los Arabos municipality, Matanzas province, Cuba, the town where his parents lived. He lived there until 1998, when, once married, he moved to Perico with his family, where he has resided until today. He attends primary school at the Frank País school and at a boarding school located in Zorrilla. In 1973 he began his secondary education studies which he completed at the Pedro Albizu Campos schools in the Jaguey Grande municipality, Gispert and at the La Caridad provisional school, in Colon. In 1976 he enrolled at the Jesús Suarez Gayol Polytechnic Institute in Havana where he graduated in 1979 as a Middle Technician in Sugar Chemistry, an activity he carried out for 6 years. In the mid-80s he became interested in the Plastic Arts and joined Cecilio Mursuli's workshop in Colon, where he made his first forays into painting. At the beginning of the 90s he met Tomas Sanchez and they became friends, which influenced his work, showing rapid development in all aspects, gaining professionalism and achieving great effectiveness in landscaping. Since 1994, by resolution of the Ministry of Culture, he works as an independent artist and markets his works through the Cuban Fund of Cultural Assets. He has held personal exhibitions in Panama and Puerto Rico. He made trips to Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and the United States. It is in Perico where he consolidates and develops professionally since it is there where most of his creative stage takes place.
