Juan Gil Garcia (1879 - 1932) Cuban
Oil on Canvas
Measure 16"in H x 28"in W and 25 1/2"in H x 37 1/2"in W with frame
Biography: Juan Gil Garcia was born in 1879 in Madrid, Spain. He emigrated to Cuba in 1899. While he studied art as a young man in Spain at Valladolid, he resumed his studies at the Asturias School in Havana. By the 1920s he was considered among the most popular painters in Cuba. Garcia also produced high quality lithographs of his still-life paintings of fruits and vegetables in editions of 50,000 copies making his images among the most visible and popular on the island. In doing this Garcia also introduced new subject matter into the lexicon of Cuban painting that glorified the warm and exotic sentient world where carefully selected delectables appealed to the senses and emotions of the large and growing Cuban middle classes. Garcia also captured the Cuban countryside in a number of important paintings that celebrated the Royal Palm and the vast and sublime fertile countryside of rural Cuba. Garcia died in Havana, Cuba, in 1932.
