Description
Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Messapia, ca. 4th century BCE. This is a bulbous terracotta vessel with a pronounced rim, disc foot, and with twin curved handles on the shoulder. The color is a beige/cream slip painted background with decorated umber pigment in scrolliate motifs and as accent banding. The Messapians lived on the southeastern heel of Italy and had trade relationships with Magna Graecia. Size: 12-1/2"W x 8-1/4"H (31.8 cm x 21 cm).
