Item Details
Description
Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, Daunian, early Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd century BCE. A beautiful vessel comprised of conjoined twin chambers, of globular forms with flared rims and planar bases, that are intersected with a raised strap handle. The surfaces of each beige-hued buffware chamber are decorated with captivating decorative registers including concentric semicircles and petite triangles inside the rim; inversely corresponding waves along the shoulders; interlocking circles with some bearing red or pink fugitive pigment; dense lattice-patterned panels above a horizontal red stripe; parallel serpentine lines with three-lobed flowers within the concave curves; and abstract foliate and geometric motifs separated with columns of zigzags or circles. Radiating spokes adorn the base of each chamber, and mirrored bands of cresting waves embellish the handle above a strip of red pigment that stretches beneath the midsection. Size: 10.75" L x 5.375" W x 7.875" H (27.3 cm x 13.7 cm x 20 cm)
