Description
Northern Italy, Etruria, Genucilia group, ca. 4th century BCE. A low footed ceramic dish painted in red and black, the central spiral wave design delineated with five spiraled points, the inner tondo decorated with a four pointed astral motif, with three dots on the interstices. Adorned on the exterior with red and black bands around rim, foot, and underside of shoulder. Size: 5-1/2" in diameter x 2-1/2".

The name 'Genucilia' derives from a Latin or Faliscan lady of the name Poplia Genucilia, who owned a similar plate inscribed with her name. To compare with similar examples from the Genucilia workshop cf. no. 316-319 in the publication: Ines Stucker. Italy of the Etruscans. Exhibitions catalogue, Jerusalem 1991.

Provenance: Ex-Art for Eternity, Howard Nowes, acquired from an Aachen, Germany Collection, acquired in the 1960s.
