Etruscan Genucilia Plate w/ Lady of Fashion
Etruscan Genucilia Plate w/ Lady of Fashion
Item Details
Description
Etruscan, Genucilia Group, Faliscan, ca. 300 BCE. A wonderful Etruscan plate of the Genucilia Group featuring a Lady of Fashion surrounded by four spiral waves painted in black pigment on the tondo, with black striations highlighting the contours of the rim, pedestal, and foot. This particular example is deemed Faliscan, as scholar Mario Del Chiaro, who conducted seminal research on Genucilia Group Etruscan plates, observed that the sakkos of the Caeretan Branch featured a cross-hatched, almost netted pattern, while painters of the Faliscan Genucilia depicted sakkos with stylized palmettes as we see here. An example similar to this piece exists in the Museu Nazionale Romano: Terme di Diocleziano. (See p. 24 of Alexander Mazurek's landmark paper about Etruscan Genucilia Ware cited below.) In addition to this intriguing painted decoration, the form is quite elegant, boasting a round plate with a nice depression and a gently bulged rim raised upon a pedestal that emerges from a low circular foot. Size: 5.25" W x 2.375" H (13.3 cm x 6 cm)

The name of this type of pottery derives from a Faliscan or Latin female named Poplia Genucilia who possessed a similar plate inscribed with her name on the underside. This name plate with the dipinto P. Genucilia resides in the collection of the Rhode Island School of Design Museum. For further information on Etruscan Genucilia Ware, see Alexander Mazurek's paper entitled, "Etruscan Genucilia Ware: A Discussion on Its History and Past Scholarship" (http://www.chronikajournal.com/resources/Mazurek%202015.pdf).
