Description
Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely and rare oil on tin retablo depicting Saint Boniface the Martyr, the patron saint of brewers and file cutters. San Bonifacio, has traditionally been celebrated as a respected missionary and credited as one of the great European unifiers. Bonifacio is also believed to have been the inventor of the Christmas tree. In this finely painted retablo, San Bonifacio is shown with military attributes, a skull (a symbol of mortality) and the fronds of a lily (a symbol of purity). Beneath the scene, the artist painted his name - "S. Bonifacio - Martir." Size: 14" x 10"
