This is a rare and significant theme in retablo art. San Raphael is customarily petitioned to cure blindness and poor vision. He is traditionally depicted holding a fish that he used to restore the eyesight of the youthful Tobias' father. Rafael served as the guardian angel, protector, and guide of Tobias on his journey. Note that he holds a pilgrim\'s staff and a canteen. Size: 14"H x 10"W.

Archangels are understood to be helpers and allies who offer dedicated protection through life's trials and travails. Their names usually end in the suffix \"ael\" or \"iel\" meaning “Shining One” in Hebrew, e.g. Miguel, Rafael, Gabriel, Ariel, Ezekiel, Barachiel, Uriel, etc.

The word retablo literally means \"behind the altar.\" Icons like these were placed above household altars to venerate the saints and members of the holy family. The retablo became immensely popular in the 19th century due to the affordability of tin. Today retablos continue to be used for worship; however, they also make for fabulous folk art collections.
