Item Details
Description
Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. Beautifully painted large retablo on tin with the traditional depiction of San Francisco de Paola, the saint associated with charity. Note the word "Caridad" is painted at the top right of the composition. St. Francis, the founder of the Minim Friars, was known for the miracles he performed. The artist depicted him in the traditional fashion wearing his dark brown habit, with his head surrounded by a glowing halo suggestive of his miraculous powers. The artist clearly had impeccable skills in rendering a wonderful sense of naturalism in the Saint's facial features and depicts San Francisco with sensitive eyes, ruddy cheeks, virtually palpable soft skin and heart-shaped lips with an emotive expression of compassion. He holds a rosary in his right hand and a shepherd's staff cradled in his left hand and is poised to perform his next miracle. Size: 14-1/8"H x 10"W.
