Description
Latin America, Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful painted tin retablo depicting the Virgin Mary as Nuestra Senora de la Soledad or Our Lady of Solitude, standing atop a pedestal and draped in a long, blue mantle over a white, lace gown. Crowned by a sunburst halo, the Virgin holds both hands to her chest, simultaneously in prayer and clutching her rosary, as trailing vines of roses rise to either side. Her long gown and veil give her a triangular form, reminiscent of the Holy Trinity. This retablo is based from a painting of the sculpture of Our Lady of Solitude from the Convent of the Padres de la Victoria in Madrid, Spain. The original painting was commissioned by Queen Elisabeth of Valois, the third wife of Philip II. Size: 9" W x 13.25" H (22.9 cm x 33.7 cm)
