Francisco Zúñiga (Mexican, b. Costa Rica, 1912-1998)
One of the most notable Mexican artists of the 20th century, José Jesús Francisco Zúñiga Chavarría was born in Costa Rica in 1912. Influenced by German Expressionism, Maillol and Rodin, Zúñiga’s painting and sculpture first gained recognition in 1929, winning numerous prizes. Throughout the course of his career, Zúñiga created over thirty-five public sculptures. His works can be found in the public collections of numerous institutions, including the Hirschhorn Museum, Washington, DC; San Diego Museum of Art; Ponce Museum of Art, Puerto Rico; Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, AZ; Muséo de Arte Moderno, Mexico City; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
