Wifredo Lam (Cuban, 1902-1982)
Internationally-renowned Cuban painter, sculptor and draughtsman Wifredo Lam is best known for his cross-cultural style of painting, combining Western modernism with Afro-Cuban symbolism. Born in Cuba, Lam moved to Spain in 1923 before moving to Paris after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. There he became associated with the Surrealists, as well as Pablo Picasso, who encouraged his interest in African art and primitive masks. Lam returned to Cuba in 1940, where he was inspired by his own multicultural heritage to create a series of works inspired by the plight and culture of the Afro-Cuban population. With violent and mythical compositions and abstracted figures, he explored themes of ritual, tradition and voodoo. Lam returned to Paris in 1946 and his later works are characterized by increasingly simplified forms and colors. His works can be found in the collections of numerous public and private institutions around the world, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana, and the Museum of Modern Art in Brussels.
