Description
'Landscape with Castle and Figure on River'. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Note: Ellertson was born in Wisconsin, and studied art at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. In 1914 he went abroad to France and Spain, and came back to the States at the advent of World War I. In 1920, he settled Tryon, NC. In 1923, he designed and built 'El Taarn' a grand historicist three-story mansion with a polygonal tower and Tudor-style. While he tended to eschew pure landscapes, Ellertson painted scenes—at home and abroad—that were frequently rendered with a tilted perspective. The word “lyrical?? has also been used to describe his work, perhaps because his palette tended toward delicate colors. Ellertson died on his forty-third birthday after suffering a heart attack. He exhibited at Alfred Stieglitz’s gallery, NY and, his work is in the permanent collection of the Phillips Collection, Washington, DC. Property from a Baltimore, MD, collector. Dimensions: 21" h x 26" w. Frame: 27" h x 32.50" w.
