Enrico Baj (Italian, 1924-2003)
One of the leading figures of the 1950 avant-garde, Enrico Baj created works in variety of media, including paintings, drawings, collages and sculptures. Often depicting a range of caricature-like figures, his work challenged the bourgeois conventions of the time. In 1951, Baj founded Movimento Nucleare which set itself against the rational abstract art of the time. His participation in the 1964 Venice Biennale earned him international acclaim. Baj’s works can be found in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Australia and London’s Tate Gallery.
