Description
CIVIL WAR - UNION SEAMAN NINTH-PLATE TINTYPE, lightly tinted, figure seated against a painted studio backdrop. Housed in an embossed leather case with design featuring eagle and shield. Brass mat marked for "Emerson, Providence, RI". Together with an ambrotype, lightly tinted, of an attractive young lady, seated and holding an open cased image in her hand. Both images discovered together. Two pieces total. Third quarter 19th century. 2 1/2" x 2" image.
Provenance: From an Alexandria, VA private collection.
Catalogue Note: The ambrotype of the young woman in the present lot was discovered underneath the image of the Seaman. Given the similar wear patterns to each image and their discovery together, it is not unreasonable to conclude that the man and woman featured were either related or romantically involved.
