Description
A very pleasing pair of hard images of Horace Wakefield Lincoln and his wife. A note on the reverse Horace’s photo, a ninth plate tintype, indicates the image was made on June 3, 1863. The image of his wife is a sixth plate ambrotype that looks to have been made a bit earlier. Lincoln, dressed in civilian clothes, first enlisted in the US Navy and served about a year before his term expired. In early 1864 he re-enlisted, this time in the Army with the 25th Massachusetts Infantry, and went on to be wounded at the battle of Drury’s Bluff in May 1864. He recovered and served until the end of the War. This timeline tracks to the note that accompanies Lincoln’s image - he would have been a civilian at that time. In any event, this is a nice pair of photos of a man who served his country on both land and sea, and the spouse who supported him along the way. Ninth plate image is housed in half of a leatherette case and has some minor wear, mostly mat rubs and solarization. The sixth plate image is sharp and clear, with some crazing towards the bottom of the plate.
