Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Casas Grandes, ca. 1100 to 1450 CE. An impressive gourd-shaped pottery vessel decorated with elaborate red and black motifs atop a cream-hued ground. The round-bottomed vessel features a piriform lower body, a rounded spout with a narrow mouth, and a strap handle on the verso. The Casas Grandes (or Chihuahua) culture has always been the best known of the prehistoric cultures of northwest Mexico. International awareness of the culture first derived from its polychrome pottery and from the massive ruins of the culture's principal center, Casas Grandes - also known as Paquime.
