Description
Pre-Columbian, northern Mexico, Casas Grandes, ca. 12th century CE. A truly interested example of the very fine pottery produced in this region of northern Mexico! "Ramos Polychrome" circular jar, but painted in such a way that if viewed from the front you would swear it was quite oval in shape, almost looking like a modern football (see images 2 and 4). Painted in red and black over tan ground with long eye and beak patterns in alternating colors; added bands of black above the eye/beak decorations and separating the two sides. Rounded base and short rim with added red band. Size: 8.5" W x 6.25" H (21.6 cm x 15.9 cm)
The Casas artisans were well known for their love of all things avian and a very large percentage of such vessels have an avian theme of one form or another, with some of the finest examples depicting entire birds.
