Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, ca. 1000 BCE to 1400 CE. A terracotta tool for shaping pottery vessels and a flattened terracotta dish or tool. The anvil is a mushroom shaped implement used by potters when building pots via the coil method, and the rounded anvil head would be held inside against the soft wall to retain the shape while the outside was scraped smooth, enabling strong but thinner walls. It is unclear if the circular dish was used in conjunction with the anvil tool. Size of dish: 5.75" Diameter x 0.75" H (14.6 cm x 1.9 cm)
