Item Details

Description

Great hand-colored map of the visible constellations in the second quarter of the year by Elijah H. Burritt. These are from Burritt’s 1835 edition of his atlas which, due to the rarity of the 1833 edition, are usually the earliest Burritt maps available. On this map are Hydra the Water Snake, Leo the Lion, Virgo the Virgin and other fantastical creatures from Greek and Roman mythology. The Zodiacal figure drawings are by Burritt himself. His 1835 celestial charts present the night sky as viewed in each of the four seasons. Each chart has a Scale of Magnitude of the stars to indicate the brightness of each star when viewed by a person locating the constellations in the night sky. Burritt was a Connecticut school teacher who felt school astronomy books available in the early 1830s were not adequate. Intent on writing his own astronomy school textbook, Burritt trained himself in the science by traveling to Cambridge, Massachusetts and using Harvard’s Telescope. Burritt's 1835 Atlas and textbook became the 19th century American standard astronomy texts for students in the United States and remained so for at least a generation. Clean and nicely hand colored at the time of publishing. 13.125 x 13.75
