Description
One of the most striking maps of Southern Texas to come out of this era. Tunison's Peerless Universal Atlas is a unique and interesting blend of styles, emulating the modern commercial publishers of Chicago (Cram, McNally) on one hand, and the hand-colored look of the still-active older publishers (Colton, Mitchell, etc.). Presented in vivid chromolithographic printing, the color areas are solid and even, much like the hand-colored maps of earlier publishers. This is why Tunison's maps are prized by collectors as excellent examples of a blended late 19th Century printing style. Includes inset of W. Texas. Shows railroads, rivers, forts, towns, etc. Repaired tear at bottom margin (does not go into frame). Repair done using kozo, which is reversible and lasts a thousand years. Two tiny spots in inset. Minor toning at extreme edges. 12.625 x 20.
