Description
- Thomas Jacob Sharp, Confederate Captain, Company E, 10 th Mississippi Infantry, Killed in Action in 1864, brother of Confederate General Jacob Hunter Sharp - LIFE OF ANDREW JACKSON . . . VOLUME I. [Vol. 1-One only.] by Parton, James, 1822-1891. Thomas Jacob Sharp, 1826-1864 (original owner). [Andrew Jackson 1767-1845.] Poor condition - need to be re-cased and sold as is. VOLUME I ONLY of a three volume set. First edition (not stated; 1860 date on title with 1859 copyright on verso). i-xxx, [2], 29-636 pages. Hardcover: H 23.75cm x L 15.25cm. Contemporary calf leather binding; boards stained and worn at edges; rear board detached; spine leather perished with underlying paper back strip exposed lengthwise; front board still fairly firm. Marbled endpapers and text block edges. Child's pencil inscription "Willie Sharp at home" at top of front flyleaf and pencil signature "Willie Sharp" on rear flyleaf; pencil signature "T.J. Sharp" at top of page iii. Foxing, toning, soiling, some staining, and scattered pencil marks to interior leaves; some creased corners; chipping to pages 633-634; pages 635-636, two rear flyleaves, and rear free endpaper all detached as well. Frontispiece b/w portrait of Jackson retains tissue guard. Popular 19th century biography of General Andrew Jackson. Willie Sharp Askew (1861-1896) was the daughter of Confederate Army Brigadier General Jacob Hunter Sharp who was a Columbus, Mississippi attorney prior to the Civil War and who resumed his legal career post-war as well as being editor and publisher of the Columbus Independent and serving in the Mississippi House of Representatives. General Sharp's brother Thomas Jacob Sharp (1826-1864) achieved the rank of captain serving with Company E, 10th Mississippi Infantry and was killed at the battle of Atlanta. As Thomas Sharp was unmarried and childless at his death it seems likely that his books were inherited by his brother.
