Item Details

Description

Wonderful quarter plate ambrotype of Charles N. Frost of the 1st Louisiana Infantry. Frost was Captain of Company K, the “Orleans Light Guards," who were raised in New Orleans. An ink-inscribed card found behind the image identifies Frost and notes that this regiment was stationed at “Camp Aline” on July 4, 1861 (possibly the day this photo was made). This detail appears consistent with surviving records associated with Capt. Frost, who has been difficult to research. Confederate documents and service files are often incomplete.

The image itself is sharp and clear, showing the gallant-looking Frost from the waist up. He is clad in a dark uniform and matching kepi, on which is pinned the state seal of Louisiana (a pelican feeding her young). Shoulder bars indicating the rank of Captain are also plainly visible.

Hairline fracture to the plate, which is now stable and ready for display. Image is housed in a full leatherette case.
