Description
Very Rare, World War II Feldpost Afrika Korps 1943 brown military parcel stamp. The so called 'Rommel Afrika Korps' stamp, given to German soldiers serving in North Africa to mail packages home. It is thought that one million stamps had been printed and were to be distributed to Africa Korps soldiers fighting in Tunisia, April 1943. With a planned distribution of 2 stamps per soldier, one stamp paid for the postal cost of a package up to 250g when shipping through the Feldpost system. Over six hundred thousand of these stamps were destroyed when the Afrika Korps surrendered in May 1943, about one month after it's debut. Printed in Tunisia by the German Army Postal Master on locally obtained equipment, including stone printing blocks that deteriorated quickly with use, hence the varying print quality and degradation of details on many of these stamps. Stamped on the verso ‘Kesselstatt BPP’. In fine condition.
