Description
A scratch built ship model of the frigate La Flore du Americana, by Jean Boudroit, mounted in glazed case, overall 45.75"h x 55"w x 24.5"d. Provenance: Ken Brown, Frank's Fisherman, San Francisco. Note: The frigate La Flore, built at Le Havre in 1756, was eventually captured by the British in January 1761. Recommissioned (or "pressed") into the Royal Navy in July 1761, she was renamed HMS Flora. In April 1776, she sailed to North America. Later, she was sold to the French Navy in Bordeaux in September 1784 and became known as La Flore Américaine. A model of La Flore Americaine with full sails was presented to John F. Kennedy by Andre Malraux, the French Minister of Culture, in 1962. President Kennedy kept the model in the Oval Office; however, it now resides in the JFK Library in Boston, Massachusetts.
