Description
Balloon corps remnant. Matted and framed with print of a balloon and American flag with typed caption: “A piece of Professors Lowes Aeronautical balloon “Enterprise” taken by Lt. S. Millett Thompson of the 13th New Hampshire Vol. Inf. after it was destroyed upon landing near his camp on the Peninsula in 1862.”
Wonderfully presented relic of the Civil War era balloon “Enterprise,” created and operated by “Chief Aeronaut” of the Army of the Potomac’s short-lived Balloon Corps, Professor Thaddeus S.C. Lowe. This fascinating relic is mounted with a print by artist and topographical engineer R.K. Sneden, which depicts a similar balloon in use.
While the so-called Balloon Corps had a short-lived existence, it played a significant role in intelligence gathering operations during the Peninsula campaign.
