HMS Royal George: a rare novelty Prattware pipe, circa 1782-1800
Modelled as a ship of the line with three decks complete with rigging, incised 'Royal Gerge [sic]', a male 'figurehead' with a moulded crown forming the bowl of the pipe, a hollow leg above the rudder serving as the mouthpiece, picked out in brown, ochre, blue and green, 19.2cm long

HMS Royal George was the largest warship in the world at the time of her launch in 1756 and had an illustrious battle career but is best known for her tragic sinking whilst anchored off Portsmouth on 29 August 1782 and the subsequent loss of nearly 900 lives.

The lower portion of the pipe is in good condition, including the green 'water' base and the keel, rudder, gun decks and upper decks of the ship itself. The figurehead is also in good condition, save for two shallow areas of restoration and a very small shallow chip to the rim of the bowl of the pipe above the figurehead's crown. There is some restoration to the ankle of the leg forming the mouthpiece of the pipe but this is otherwise in good condition. There is restoration to the sails and rigging, affecting most of the rigging, six of the seven blue and yellow 'sails' and the three pennants. The three masts are in good condition save for a little restoration to the base of one where it meets the deck. The ochre handle of the tiller is restored but the tiller itself is not.
There is overall typical crazing to the glaze but otherwise the glaze remains glossy and smooth, save for a small number of tiny and insignificant points of glaze loss.
