Description
Ca. 400 - 300 BC.
A pottery lekythos. It was a vessel used particularly during funerary practices. It typically served as an oil flask, symbolizing the ritualistic offering of oil at gravesites. This lekythos exhibits an ovoid body resting on a flared foot, with an elegant slender neck, culminating in a flared mouth. A strap handle connecting the shoulder to the neck. Executed in black-figure style, the lekythos features a seated figure dressed in a heavy and voluminous robe. In the left outstretched hand, the figure holds a wreath. The black accentuation is applied to the foot, mouth, handle, and around the neck, showcasing a linear pattern.
Size: 160mm x 75mm; Weight: 210g
Provenance: Property of a central London gallery, previously acquired on the Dutch art market; Ex. Frederik Van Driel, Maastricht 1993. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
