Description
Ca. 440 BC.
A petite, finely-decorated red-figure Attic squat lekythos, a vessel used by the ancients to store precious oils and perfumes. The vessel itself is comprised of a slightly-concave and corseted base, a bulbous body, rounded shoulders which gradually taper to a narrow, tubular neck, a discoid rim, and an applied loop handle. The iconography on the front depicts a profile of a griffIn facing right with open wings on the shoulders and long lion tail. For similar see, Met Museum Accession Number: 17.230.13.
Size: 85mm x 50mm; Weight: 70g
Provenance: Property of a central London gallery, acquired on the US art market; Ex. collection of John R. Orr, Toledo, Ohio, acquired in the 1980s, to family by inheritance. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
