An Attic red-figure lekythos
Attributed to the Workshop of Brygos, circa 490-470 B.C. Depicting a bearded man with a fillet in his hair and wearing a himation, he leans on a knobbly staff holding a lyre in his outstretched left hand, with bands of meander above and below, the shoulder with linked palmettes, 26.5cm high

The Brygos painter, though more well known for his drinking cups, now has over 200 vases attributed to him, including a small selection of lekythoi. He was a student of Onesimos, and is characterised by his truthful depictions of the human body. He enjoyed painting scenes of genre and myth as well as symposia and athletic feats.
