Hon. John Brooks MD 1825

Brooks, M.D. LL.D. (May 31, 1752 – March 1, 1825) was an American doctor, military officer, and politician from Massachusetts. He served as the 11th Governor of Massachusetts from 1816 to 1823, and was one of the last Federalist officials elected in the United States. He was also a leading member of the Massachusetts Medical Society and served as its president from 1823 to 1825.

Brooks was born in Medford, Massachusetts, and received his medical education from Dr. Simon Tufts, Jr. He began practicing medicine in Reading, Massachusetts, in 1775. At the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War, Brooks joined the Continental Army as a captain. He quickly rose through the ranks and was eventually promoted to colonel. He served with distinction in several battles, including the Battle of Saratoga and the Battle of Yorktown.

After the war, Brooks returned to his medical practice in Medford. He was a highly respected physician and was known for his compassion and skill. He was also a leader in the Massachusetts Medical Society and was elected its president in 1823.

In addition to his medical career, Brooks was also active in politics. He served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1792 to 1793 and in the Massachusetts Senate from 1794 to 1795. In 1816, he was elected Governor of Massachusetts. He served two terms as governor and was a popular leader.

Brooks died in Medford in 1825 at the age of 72. He is remembered as a distinguished physician, military officer, and politician. He was also a dedicated leader of the Massachusetts Medical Society.
