[ENSLAVEMENT & ABOLITION]. Manuscript deed of manumission listing five enslaved persons. Washington County, MD, May 1855.
2pp, 8 1/4 x 12 in., bifolium, folds, toning, occasional spotting and ink smearing. Docketing to terminal leaf.

Deed outlines the manumission of Jacob Brown, a 16-year-old male, born on 26 March 1840; John Gaunt, a 28-year-old male born on 223 March 1828; Isaac Gaunt, a 20-year-old male born on 16 February 1836; Lizzy Gaunt, a 13-year-old female born 25 March 1843; and Lucy Brown, a 36-year-old female born on 6 August 1819. Catharine Schindel of Washington County, Maryland declares the named enslaved persons to be "manumitted and discharged from all manner of servitude or service" once they turn 30 years old. Schindel places her mark at the end of the document, which is countersigned by a justice of the peace and one other person.
