The first shows instructor Fannie Langford teaching formerly enslaved children how to read and write at the first school for the formerly enslaved in South Carolina, the Hooper School on the Old Fort Plantation in Beaufort, SC, Port Royal Island. The second carte is signed on verso, “Fannie Langford, Hooper School, Old Fort Plantation, Beaufort, SC Port Royal Island.” Written on bottom recto “My favorite pupil Uncle Smart Washington 71 yrs.” -- Anonymous tintype believed to show Fannie Langford, 3 3/4 x 2 1/2 in. Together, an important trio of photographs of female instructor Fannie Langford and the formerly enslaved peoples that she taught at the Hooper School on the Old Fort Plantation, which later came to be known as Smith's plantation in Beaufort County, South Carolina.
