Civil War Letter, Admonishing New Haven Soldiers' Behavior
ALS

A Civil War-dated letter from a Connecticut resident concerning the behavior of furloughed soldiers. 4pp of a bifolium, measuring 5" x 8", Norwich, April 9, 1863. From Ms. Josephine to her soldier friend George, who she identifies as "Old Bach". In an informal and chatty letter, Josephine inquires about George's supposed new "Dixie Lady" and disparages the recently departed soldiers. With flattened mail folds and light foxing. Very fine.

In part:
"...while I am writing this the cars are taking two hundred and fifty Furloughed soldiers back to their companies and probably any a woman here in Norwich will cry their eyes out tonight...Oh my what fools we Ladies are to supose [ sic ] that the dear little loves of sugers [ sic ] should care anything about the girls they leave at home when they can find a sweetheart any day among the fair damsels of the South: (say among the Alexandria Ladies for instance). Oh these Boys are gay deceivers and its almost dangerous for a woman to be safe in their society...these soldiers are uncertain fellows any way and I am glad I aint one for I know I should be ruined. I should learn to be roguish and go to see the girls and get to drinking as like as not and the merey knows then what might become of me..."
