A Revolutionary War-dated, handwritten pay order signed by Oliver Ellsworth. 1p, measuring 8.25" x 3.75", Connecticut, dated July 19, 1775. Signed "Oliv Ellsworth" and addressed to John Lawrence Esq., Treasurer. Reading in full: "Pay Caleb Turner Junr Ten Shilling Money in Bills for Horse Hire in the Colony & Service as [illegible] acct. & charge the same to acct of the colony Connectt." Countersigned by Thomas Seymour. With docketing on verso, No. 2105, with the receipt of money. Audited May 18, 1776. The document has flattened folds and uneven edges. Small cut at the right edge. Light toning throughout. Boldly signed.
Oliver Ellsworth (1745-1807) was a lawyer, judge, politician, and diplomat, renowned for being a framer of the U.S. Constitution and the third Chief Justice of the United States. He also served as a Senator from Connecticut and his influence helped ensure the state's ratifying of the Constitution in 1789.
