Description
Lodge, Oliver, Electrons, or the Nature and Properties of Negative Electricity, published London George Bell & Sons, 1907, full red leather prize binding gilt edging and seal for Nottingham High School' with gilt design and text to spine, Sir Oliver Joseph Lodge, FRS (12 June 1851 – 22 August 1940), stood as a prominent British physicist and author, leaving a lasting impact on the realm of radio development. Acknowledged for holding pivotal patents in the field, Lodge made significant contributions independent of Hertz's proof in identifying electromagnetic radiation. His noteworthy 1894 Royal Institution lectures, titled "The Work of Hertz and Some of His Successors," showcased an early radio wave detector known as the "coherer." In recognition of his contributions, Lodge was granted the "syntonic" (or tuning) patent by the United States Patent Office in 1898. Beyond his achievements in radio, Lodge served as the Principal of the University of Birmingham from 1900 to 1920, playing a crucial role in the academic landscape. Notably, Lodge's interests extended beyond the realms of physics. He was recognized for his Spiritualist beliefs and engaged in pseudoscientific exploration of life after death. This facet of his work is evident in numerous books he authored, with the best-selling "Raymond; or, Life and Death" (1916) standing out. In this work, Lodge delved into what he believed were detailed messages from his deceased adult son, who lost his life in World War I, received through a medium. Lodge's multidimensional contributions have left an indelible mark on both the scientific and spiritual spheres.
