A signed letter by Thomas L. McKenney, who served as Superintendent of Indian Affairs from 1824?1830. 1p of a bifolium, measuring 7.75" x 9.75", Georgetown, Indian Trade Office, dated July 26, 1817. signed "Thos L. McKenney" and addressed to Isaac Rawlings Jr. Esq. at the US Indian Factor, Chickasaw Bluff. The short letter reads in full: "Yours of the 23rd ultimo I have this day received & have written the agent at St. Louis to forward to your Factory with all possible dispatch four thousand pounds Lead." With flattened mail folds and light toning throughout. Scattered soiling. A small hole at one of the folds, not affecting any text. Minor loss to the address page from where the wax seal was broken. Boldly signed.

Thomas Loraine McKenney (1785-1859) was appointed Superintendent of Indian Affairs by then Secretary of War John C. Calhoun following the abolition of the U.S. Indian Trade program in 1822. He strongly advocated the American Indian ?civilization? program and became an avid promoter for the removal of Indian bands and tribes to west of the Mississippi River. McKenney helped pass of the Indian Civilization Act of 1819 and helped draft and gain passage of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. Isaac Rawlings Jr. (1788-1839) served as a sutler in Andrew Jackson's army in 1813 prior to serving the U.S. Government as an "Indian Factor" at the Chickasaw Bluffs from 1814 until around 1816/7. Factors were employed as deer skin traders and intermediaries in other trade with Native tribes.
