A cabinet card of Abraham Lincoln signed by photographer George B. Ayers. Measuring 4.25" x 6.5", Philadelphia, dated 1881. A bust portrait of a beard-less Abraham Lincoln, taken in Chicago just around the time of Lincoln's 1960 presidential nomination. Produced from the original negative owned by Ayers. Stamped with a blind embossed copyright at the lower left corner of the image. On the verso is a printed statement about the production of the cabinet card and signed by "George B. Ayres." Inscribed to Miss Laura Buckwalter and dated October 1894. The card has worn corners and edges. Slightly curled. Light toning and foxing throughout. There is a very small pinhole at the top center. Boldly signed by Ayres.

This iconic photograph of a beardless Abraham Lincoln was originally taken on June 3, 1860, by Chicago photographer Alexander Hesler (1823-1895). Hesler later sold some of his original glass negatives to Philadelphia photographer George B. Ayres in 1867. Ayres made some discrete retouches to the original negatives to correct wear or damage and began producing and selling his retouched prints in 1881.
