Pp. 14 nn., 415, 1 (Colophon); Marca tipografica figurata al Frontespizio e al colophon. Iniziali istoriate, Fregi e vignette xil.; 415 Tavole xilografiche a p.p. Ex-Libris incollato al contropiatto. Fenditura alla cerniera del dorso, internamente bell’esemplare.Bella edizione, con impressione delle incisioni molto fresca, di una delle più celebri opere figurate di Venezia. L’opera, curata da Salustio Piobbici, costituisce la più ampia raccolta di costumi edita nel ‘500. In questa edizione è citato Tiziano per la prima volta come coautore dei disegni per le xilografie. Le figure sono state incise nuovamente senza la cornice decorativa. L’opera offre un’ampia panoramica dell’abbigliamento dell’epoca. Vi sono inoltre i costumi della Turchia e dell’Africa; la parte finale, da p. 403, è consacrata all’America. Small 4to; 183x115 mm. Orange cardboard binding with gilt blind tooling on covers and spine. Pp. 14 nn., 415, 1 (Colophon); Printer’s mark on titlepage and on colophon. Woodcut initial letters, vignettes and ornaments. 415 woodcut plates on full page. Ex-Libris glued on insidecover. Cervice on joint spine, internally nice specimen.
Beautiful edition, with a very nitid impression of the engravings, of one of the most famous figurative works of Venice. The work, edited by Salustio Piobbici, constitutes the largest collection of costumes published in the 16th century. In this edition Titian is cited for the first time as co-author of the drawings for the woodcuts. The figures were re-engraved without the decorative frame. The work offers a broad overview of the clothing of the time. There are also the customs of Turkey and Africa; the final part, from p. 403, is dedicated to America.
