In quest’opera Galileo annuncia la sua scoperta delle macchie solari e dei satelliti di Giove e difende apertamente il sistema copernicano. Osservando il Sole al telescopio, Galileo aveva scorto sulla sua superficie numerose macchie. Altrove le stesse macchie erano state osservate da Christoph Scheiner, un matematico gesuita allora residente in Baviera. Mark Welser, notabile di Augusta e conoscente di entrambi, sollecitò un parere sulla nuova scoperta. Le divergenze che emersero sulla natura delle macchie solari rispecchiavano la divaricazione di fondo fra la posizione inossidabilmente filoaristotelica dello Scheiner, incapace di superare l'idea dell'incorruttibilità dei cieli, e la proiezione di Galileo verso la nuova cosmologia copernicana. Le tre lettere inviate da Galileo al Welser e pubblicate dall'Accademia dei Lincei col titolo di Istoria e dimostrazioni intorno alle macchie solari e loro accidenti non si fermano perciò alla disamina del fenomeno osservato, ma lo prendono a pretesto per attaccare il conformismo acritico degli avversari, fino ad affermare la verità naturale dell'eliocentrismo e del moto terrestre. DSB: “demolishing Scheiner’s conjecture that the spots were tiny planets […] spoke out decisively for the Copernican system for the first time in print [... and] found a place for his first published mention of the concept of conservation of angular momentum and an associated inertial concept. During its composition he had taken pains to determine the theological status of the idea of incorruptibility of the heavens, finding that this was regarded by churchmen as an Aristotelian rather than a Catholic dogma”.Sono state pubblicate due diverse tirature di questa edizione: la prima è come la nostra copia che termina a pagina 164, la seconda contiene alla fine il De maculis solaribus epistolae tres di Scheiner Probabilmente la spiegazione delle due tirature sta nel diritto d’Autore: la prima era destinata al mercato europeo, mentre la seconda era destinata al mercato italiano, per in Italia nel mercato italiano. Poiché Scheiner insegnava allora a Ingolstadt, il tipografo Mascardi ha potuto pubblicare le sue lettere in Italia, ma i privilegi a nord delle Alpi sarebbero stati violati.Cinti 44; Carli e Favaro 60; DSB V, p. 242.

Editio Princeps. In this work Galileo announces his discovery of the sunspots and the satellites of Jupiter and openly defends the Copernican system. Observing the Sun through a telescope, Galileo had seen numerous spots on its surface. Elsewhere the same spots had been observed by Christoph Scheiner, a Jesuit mathematician. Mark Welser, notable from Augusta and acquaintance of both, solicited an opinion on the new discovery. The divergences that emerged on the nature of sunspots mirrored the basic divergence between Scheiner's unshakably pro-Aristotelian position, unable to overcome the idea of the incorruptibility of the heavens, and Galileo's projection towards the new Copernican cosmology. The three letters sent by Galileo to Welser and published by the Accademia dei Lincei with the title of "Istoria e dimostrazioni intorno alle macchie solari e loro accidenti" therefore do not stop at the examination of the observed phenomenon, but take it as a pretext to attack the uncritical conformism of the adversaries , to the point of affirming the natural truth of heliocentrism and terrestrial motion. During its composition he had taken pains to determine the theological status of the idea of incorruptibility of the heavens, finding that this was regarded by churchmen as an Aristotelian rather than a Catholic dogma” Two different issues of this edition are known; the first one is like our copy ending a page 164, the second one contains at the end Scheiner’s De maculis solaribus epistolae tres. Probably the explanation for the two issues is that in the Italian market there would be no copyright dispute, as there would with an issue intended for export. Since Scheiner was then teaching at Ingolstadt, the printer Mascardi would be able to publish his letters in Italy, but north of the Alps privileges would be infringed.
