Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 600 to 200 BCE. A hand-carved axe god figure of squat, abstract form bearing string-cut grooves and soft red pigment on the face. Scholars posit that axe god figures like this example were repurposed from stone axe heads that were damaged or otherwise unusable. Size: 1.9" W x 3.6" H (4.8 cm x 9.1 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966

Minor nicks and abrasions, with fading to facial pigment, and softening to some string-cut details, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to figural form, and facial pigment is still visible.
