Description
Southern Africa, Mozambique or Tanzania, Makonde peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A beautiful helmet mask, hand-carved from lightweight wood, depicting a stylized human face with a hollowed-out interior cavity. The intriguing dark painted face presents with a ringed neck base, cupped ears, stylized lips, a broad nose with flattened nostrils, and slender eyes recessed beneath plateaued brows.
