Lossing, Benson J. PICTORIAL FIELD BOOK OF THE CIVIL WAR. [SUBSCRIBER'S COPY, SALESMAN'S DUMMY] Hartford: Thomas Belknap, n.d. (circa 1877). From library of HANNIBAL HAMLIN, Vice-President to Lincoln. Small quarto. Full morocco boards with embossed floral design around central panel. Upper with title lettered in gilt, gilt-stamped name "Capt. A. Annard" at bottom. Spine with 5 raised bands, gilt lettering in 2nd compartment, gilt motifs in remaining. Beveled edges. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. With 30 pages of engravings--portraits, composites, scenes, etc.--at front, plus many in-text illustrations throughout. Salesman's dummy example for subscriber's, with sample excerpts from all three volumes. Massive quantity of subscribers' signatures at back. Ex libris J.W. Murphy, bookplate on front free endpaper. Additionally, stamp of library of Hannibal Hamlin on title; Hannibal Hamlin (1809 ? 1891) was an American attorney and politician who served as the 15th vice president of the United States from 1861 to 1865, during President Abraham Lincoln's first term. He was the first Republican vice president. Inscription on front free endpaper verso reads, "Any good book seller of rare books in U.S. would pay [x] for this vol." Generally good condition, various imperfections: upper hinge broken, some interior leaves worn at edges, etc. *Additional images and detailed condition reports are available upon request.
